TikTok Pro Events retook #1 as Capital One Mobile's two-day reign ended

The World Cup companion app climbed back to the top after four mornings at #2, Capital One slid to #2 but kept a second app climbing as its month-end engagement thesis held only partially, Wingstop's app-gated Wing Week free-wings promo pushed it +16 while Taco Bell's expired $1 deal slid it to #44, Freecash climbed back into the top 10 on its paid-install engine, the microdrama cohort split between TikTok's own PineDrama rising and DramaBox falling, eight streaming and TV apps rose together as work apps slid, and Meta's Edits re-entered the chart far behind CapCut.
TikTok Pro Events retook #1, ending Capital One Mobile's two-day reign
TikTok Pro Events sat at #1 on Apple's US free apps chart this morning (Apple, anerg Jul 30), up one spot from #2, where it had been parked since July 26. Capital One Mobile fell one spot to #2, ending the 15-year-old banking app's two-day run at #1 on Tuesday and Wednesday that never came with an outage, launch, or breach disclosure to explain it, as covered earlier this week.
- TikTok Pro Events first touched #1 on July 24 (Ember Picks), then spent four mornings at #2 behind Netflix Game Controller and Capital One. It launched June 3 as TikTok's standalone "cultural moments" companion, debuting with a FIFA World Cup fan hub where users earn "Stars" redeemable for FIFA merch and TikTok Shop coupons (TechCrunch, eMarketer).
- Capital One did not collapse. It sits at #2, and its sibling Capital One Shopping climbed +8 to #53, putting two Capital One apps in the top 100. That softens the month-end thesis from the last two days, that its more than 100 million monthly users re-logging in around July 28-31 paychecks and bill pay held #1 on Apple's engagement-weighted algorithm. The hold proved real, but not durable enough to keep #1 past two days.
Wingstop climbed +16 on an app-gated free-wings promo, the mirror of Taco Bell's fade
Wingstop jumped +16 to #59 on Apple's US free chart (anerg Jul 30), driven by Wingstop Wing Week, a five-day takeover (July 27-31) built around National Chicken Wing Day on July 29. The offer is textbook chart mechanics: five free wings with a $10+ purchase, promo code FREEWINGS, redeemable only through the Wingstop app or website, with Club Wingstop members able to claim it once daily July 28-30 (Wingstop IR, Hip2Save).
- The discount is the hook, the app is the gate. Wingstop paired the food deal with a $1 million giveaway of Ticketmaster gift cards and concert trips, all unlocked through the app. Today, July 30, is the last day Club members can redeem the daily free-wings offer before Wing Week closes July 31.
- The mechanic's tail is visible in Taco Bell, which slid -12 to #44 as its own one-day, app-only $1 Mexican Pizza promo (July 28) unwound. Same loss-leader-behind-an-app playbook, opposite direction: the app whose deal is still live climbs, the app whose deal expired falls.
Freecash climbed +6 back into the top 10
Freecash rose +6 to #9 on Apple's US free chart (anerg Jul 30), the rewards app's latest bounce in a pattern that has kept it oscillating between #4 and #13 since Apple reinstated it on June 17 after a two-month removal.
- Freecash was pulled from the App Store on April 13 for misleading marketing and reinstated June 17, claiming 80 million users and $300 million paid out (PR Newswire). TechCrunch profiled how it "scammed its way to the top" on a rewarded-UA middleman model, where game publishers pay for engaged installs (TechCrunch).
- The model runs on paid user acquisition, with an estimated $100 million-plus in ad spend fueling the chart bounces. The +6 climb puts Freecash back in the top 10 alongside Capital One and TikTok Pro, three apps whose chart positions rest on very different engines: a bank's login engagement, an events companion's fandom loop, and a rewards app's paid-install machine.
The microdrama cohort split, with TikTok's own PineDrama rising as DramaBox fell
The short-drama apps moved in two directions. DramaBox slid -2 to #11, StoryReel fell -5 to #50, and ReelShort dropped -3 to #67, while PineDrama climbed +5 to #49 and VibeShort jumped +10 to #52 (anerg Jul 30).
- PineDrama is published by TikTok Ltd. (App Store), the same company sitting at #1 with TikTok Pro Events. TikTok is now running both an events companion and its own short-drama app on the US free chart, a two-front push into the verticals it surfed during the World Cup.
- The cohort's churn shows the genre is no longer rising as one block. The incumbents that rode the early 2026 microdrama wave are deflating while newer entrants, including TikTok's own, take the marginal climbs.
A streaming and TV cohort rose together while work apps slid
Eight streaming and TV apps climbed in unison: Roku +23 to #65, Tubi +19 to #70, Disney+ +18 to #66, Paramount+ +15 to #83, Amazon Prime Video +15 to #72, and Netflix +11 to #55, with HBO Max and Peacock re-entering the top 100 at #94 and #99 (anerg Jul 30). The mirror image sat in the productivity ranks: Microsoft Teams fell -25 to #48, YouTube -25 to #60, Zoom Workplace -25 to #84, and Microsoft Outlook -17 to #58.
- No single debut or show ties all eight together; the pattern reads as a late-July leisure-up, work-down reshuffle, the kind of broad cohort swing Apple's engagement-weighted ranking produces as attention drifts back toward entertainment ahead of August.
- Tubi's rise carries a memory of its own chart moment. The free, ad-supported Fox app hit #1 overall on June 11 by simulcasting the World Cup opener, a roughly 400 percent download spike in 48 hours (MWM). The current cohort move is quieter, a drift rather than a spike. On the money side, the cohort splits structurally: Tubi is free and ad-supported, while HBO Max, Disney+, Paramount+, Peacock, and Prime Video are subscription apps whose free-chart climb measures acquisition, not paying subscribers.
Meta's Edits re-entered the top 100, still far behind CapCut
Edits, Instagram's standalone video editor, re-entered the US free top 100 at #92 as a new entrant (anerg Jul 30), on a "busy July" update (version 440.0) that added multiple aspect ratios and an effects search (App Store).
- Edits is not a new app. Instagram launched it in April 2025 as a direct CapCut rival and has shipped more than 130 features in its first year (Gadgets 360), with an AI assistant and a desktop version previewed in June (TechCrunch).
- The gap to the app it was built to beat is wide. CapCut sits at #15 (+3), 77 spots above Edits. Meta's editor is climbing, but ByteDance's still owns the chart.
Tracking
- AI cohort. ChatGPT held #3, Claude #10, and Gemini #12, with Grok climbing +10 to #37 and Meta AI +3 to #27 (anerg Jul 30). Four of the top five apps are non-AI (TikTok Pro Events, Capital One, Netflix Game Controller, Atom); ChatGPT is the only AI app above them. No AI app has held #1 since July 24, and the ceiling keeps lowering.
- Sort-puzzle wall. Smash Fest held #1 on the free-games chart, with Block Out, Meowdoku, Magic Sort, and Bus Traffic Fever filling #2-#5, four sort-puzzle games locked into the top five (Apple).
- Theater cluster. Atom Tickets held #5 on Nolan's The Odyssey, and AMC Theatres climbed +7 to #78, the two movie apps still riding the blockbuster's second weekend.
- Apple v. Epic. No ruling. Briefing closed July 14, and Apple's last move was filing a paused securities-fraud ruling from a parallel case on July 17 to press Judge Gonzalez Rogers to stay the commission proceedings (9to5Mac, 9to5Mac). Status quo holds: 0 percent commission on external-link purchases, Apple still forgoing its 27 percent. If the stay is denied, Apple must file its commission proposal within 24 hours.
- Also moving. X climbed +11 to #25, DoorDash +10 to #24, and Kalshi edged +1 to #82 as the prediction-market app drifts far below its World Cup peak.
That’s the reading for this issue.
- Capital One Mobile held #1 a second day as Atom Tickets rode The Odyssey into the top 5 Jul 29
- Capital One Mobile jumped from #48 to #1 on Apple's US free apps chart Jul 28
- Meowdoku hit #3 on the overall free chart as sort-puzzle games took 3 of the top 6 slots Jul 27
- Netflix Game Controller retook #1, ending ChatGPT's four-day reign Jul 26
