ChatGPT jumped #4 to #1 on Apple's US free chart this morning as the World Cup cohort reverted the day after the final, FOX One sliding #1 to #14, Peacock #5 to #16, Kalshi #3 to #12 and Polymarket out of the top 25, while the AI floor the tournament had been suppressing all month finally became the chart surface, Claude climbing #14 to #7 and Gemini #12 to #8 (three AI assistants in the top 8 for the first time in this feed's coverage); Sensor Tower's State of AI 2026 report landed today with the money behind that shift, TikTok Pro Events survived the post-final test by climbing to #3, StoryReel cracked the top 10 as a near-clone of VibeShort, and Block Out overtook Meowdoku for #1 free game as Grand Games' paid-UA playbook beat the organic leader.
ChatGPT is #1 again, and the AI cohort filled the hole the World Cup left.
- The post-final reversion landed exactly the way the storyline had predicted. ChatGPT moved #4 to #1 on Apple's US free chart this morning (crawled directly), retaking the spot it held July 14-16 before the final surge pushed it down. FOX One, which had seized #1 yesterday on Spain's 1-0 extra-time win, slid 13 spots to #14. Peacock fell #5 to #16, Kalshi #3 to #12, and Polymarket dropped back out of the top 25. There are no more matches to re-inflate any of them.
- The AI cohort that had been grinding underneath tournament noise for a month surged into the vacuum. Claude climbed #14 to #7, its highest position in this feed's coverage. Google Gemini climbed #12 to #8. With ChatGPT at #1, that is three AI assistants in the top 8, the first time that has happened since the feed began tracking the chart in early July.
- Sensor Tower's State of AI 2026 report, published today, puts money behind the shift. ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app to reach one billion monthly active users in May 2026, but its share of unique AI-assistant users dropped below 50% for the first time in March. Gemini reached roughly 60% of ChatGPT's downloads in the first half of 2026, up from 46% in 2025, boosted by Android integration. Claude is flagged as one of the fastest-growing challengers across key markets. ChatGPT began testing ads in early 2026 and saw ad impressions grow sevenfold by May, and ad creatives mentioning AI generated $1.3 billion in spend globally in Q1 2026.

TikTok Pro Events survived the World Cup. The post-final test resolved in its favor.
- The question hanging over TikTok Pro Events all month was whether it would hold once the World Cup ended, or deflate with the rest of the tournament cohort. It held. The app climbed #8 to #3 on Apple's US free chart this morning, the only World Cup companion that rose instead of fell. On Google Play it sits at #3 overall US and #2 entertainment per AppBrain, with 5.4 million lifetime installs and 1.4 million in the last 30 days.
- The reason it survived is that it was never just a World Cup app. The FIFA Fan Hub was the hook, but the retention engine is TikTok's Stars gamification: users earn Stars for engaging with event content, redeemable for exclusive merchandise and TikTok Shop coupons, or convertible to donations. That loop does not depend on matches being on. The app was last updated June 29 (version 45.8.0) and carries a 4.9 rating from 15K reviews on iOS.
- The contrast with the broadcaster apps is the chart-mechanics lesson. FOX One and Peacock are single-event spikes: demand is perfectly correlated with matches, so they collapse the morning after. TikTok Pro Events layered a persistent rewards economy on top of the event, so the install base it accumulated during the tournament keeps compounding now that the tournament is over.
StoryReel cracked the top 10. It is a near-clone of VibeShort with the same $19.99/week price.
- StoryReel: Exclusive Drama climbed #17 to #10 on Apple's US free chart this morning, its first time in the top 10. It joins VibeShort at #19, giving the AI-comic-drama cohort two apps in the top 20. (VibeShort itself peaked at #5 on July 15 during the World Cup lull, then slid as the tournament apps re-inflated.) StoryReel has been downloaded about 900,000 times with 630,000 of those in the last 30 days, averaging 21,000 downloads per day, per AppBrain.
- The backstory is the interesting part. StoryReel, from Equinox Enterprises, launched on the App Store April 8 and began sustained ad spend April 30. VibeShort, from AGILE QUADRANT MEDIA, launched February 25 and began continuous ad spend in early April. Chinese trade analysis flags them as effectively the same product: identical $19.99/week and $149.99/year subscription pricing, near-identical version-number sequences and app-package sizes suggesting a shared codebase, and the same playbook of registering a Hong Kong shell, shipping the app, then switching on aggressive user-acquisition spend.
- The economics that make the clone viable: VibeShort pulled 8 million downloads and $4.37 million in in-app purchase revenue between April 12 and June 12, per insightrackr data cited by Chinese outlets. The category itself is large and growing. Sensor Tower's State of Short Drama Apps 2026 puts global short-drama downloads at 850 million in Q1 2026, up 140% year-on-year, with IAP revenue at roughly $750 million, up 20%. The AI-comic format slashes production cost versus live-action rivals like ReelShort and DramaBox, which is why two near-identical apps can both afford to buy their way up the chart at once.
The resale-fashion cohort moved into the space the World Cup vacated.
- Depop climbed #7 to #5 and Vinted climbed #11 to #9 on Apple's US free chart this morning, putting two resale-fashion apps in the top 10 for the first time this feed has tracked them. Both rose as the World Cup apps fell, filling chart positions the tournament cohort had occupied for a month.
- The two are now direct rivals with opposite business models. Depop, which eBay acquired from Etsy for $1.2 billion in February, charges sellers a 10% fee and leans on an AI-assisted listing tool that writes descriptions from a photo. Vinted, Europe's largest resale platform with roughly $12 billion in 2025 GMV, charges buyers a small fee and lets sellers list free, the model that won it Germany, France, and the UK. Vinted flipped its monthly US downloads ahead of Depop in April (1.2 million versus 1.1 million, roughly 800% year-on-year growth) and was the most-downloaded US shopping app by late June.
- The timing is the back-to-school window, which Circana frames as running from midsummer through Labor Day. TikTok thrift culture is doing the demand generation. The chart question is whether either app holds a top-10 floor through August the way TikTok Pro Events held through the World Cup, or whether this is a seasonal spike that reverts in September.
Block Out overtook Meowdoku for #1 free game. Grand Games' paid-UA playbook beat the organic leader.
- Block Out, from Istanbul-based Grand Games, moved #2 to #1 on Apple's US free-games chart this morning, displacing Meowdoku, which had held the top slot for the better part of two weeks. Meowdoku slid to #2. Grand Games now holds two of the top four free games: Block Out at #1 and Magic Sort at #4. Smash Fest (Flow Games) held at #3.
- The swap is a small but real chart event. Meowdoku's rise was organic velocity, near-zero paid user acquisition, which FoxData's June recap flagged as the counterpoint to the paid-UA playbook. Block Out's rise was the opposite: roughly $300,000 a day in user-acquisition spend, iPhone-only, over 1,000 ad creatives backed by 260 playables and 888 video variants, run for about a year without slowing down, per a Two and a Half Gamers teardown at the Sett conference in July. The paid engine finally overtook the organic one.
- Grand Games raised a $70 million Series B in May (Balderton leading) at a roughly $500 million run rate, with about $103 million total raised and around 75 people across five cells. The founders are ex-Peak Games, the Turkish studio Zynga bought. The Istanbul puzzle dominance on the US free-games chart is now a year-long structural fact, not a fluke.

- Apple v. Epic. No ruling yet. Briefing on Apple's stay motion has been complete since July 14, when Apple filed its reply calling Epic's opposition "wrong," and Judge Gonzalez Rogers is reviewing whether to pause the commission-determination proceedings while the Supreme Court reviews the contempt finding. Apple has also filed Judge Noel Wise's stay ruling from the parallel Coral Springs securities-fraud case as supporting precedent. Status quo holds: 0% commission on external-link purchases, Apple still forgoing the 27%. If the stay is denied, Apple owes a commission proposal within 24 hours. If granted, the case sits on ice through SCOTUS arguments in October.
- Kalshi and Polymarket. The World Cup cohort's August-survival test begins now. Kalshi slid #3 to #12 and Polymarket fell out of the top 25 this morning. The money that funded Kalshi's money-floor all month, $5.69 billion settled to Spain across Kalshi and Polymarket and roughly $50 billion in June combined volume, does not disappear, but there are no more matches to convert it into fresh install spikes. The open question is how much of the prediction-market install base retention-holds into August versus reverts to a sportsbook-adjacent baseline.
- Freecash. Climbed #6 to #4 on Apple's US free chart, continuing the bounce it has ridden since its June 17 reinstatement after an April 13 removal for misleading marketing. The rewards middleman model, in which game publishers pay Freecash to deliver engaged users, has kept it oscillating between #4 and #13 for five weeks. The TechCrunch teardown of how it gamed TikTok to the top remains the clearest read on the mechanic.
