ChatGPT Holds #1 as Zero World Cup Apps Remain in the Top 25. A Detective Game Cracked #12 Overnight.

ChatGPT held #1 on Apple's US free chart for a second straight morning as the World Cup cohort completed its collapse, Kalshi (#12 to out), FOX One (#14 to out) and Peacock (#16 to out) all dropping out of the top 25 for the first time since the tournament began June 11, while TikTok Pro Events climbed to #2 as the survivor that outlived the broadcasters, ColdTrace: Cold Case Mystery debuted at #12 on a simulated-phone detective format that climbed from #920 in 18 days, hololive Dreams hit #4 on the free-games chart before its launch tomorrow on 1.3 million pre-registrations, Fortnite climbed to #16 free game while paying Apple roughly 0% on its external-payment revenue, and the resale-fashion cohort put two apps in the top 10 (Depop #4, Vinted #7) as back-to-school demand fills the space the tournament vacated.
ChatGPT Holds #1 a Second Morning. The World Cup Footprint Is Gone.
ChatGPT held #1 on Apple's US free chart for a second straight morning (Jul 21-22), the AI floor now the chart surface with no tournament noise left to suppress it. The thesis this feed has tracked for two weeks, that the AI cohort was grinding up underneath World Cup chart inflation and would clear the top once the final drained, is fully paid out.
The World Cup cohort completed its collapse today. Kalshi slid #12 to out, FOX One slid #14 to out, and Peacock slid #16 to out, all three dropping out of the top 25. This is the first time zero World Cup apps have charted since the tournament began June 11. The Aug-survival test this feed opened on Jul 20 is resolving toward collapse: with no more matches to convert prediction-market volume or broadcast demand into install spikes, the cohort has nothing left to re-inflate it.
TikTok Pro Events climbed #3 to #2, overtaking Netflix Game Controller (#2 to #3) as the one World Cup companion that not only survived the post-final reversion but climbed higher. The chart-mechanics lesson is now clean: a general events app (FIFA Fan Hub, Stars rewards, Shop coupons) outlived the single-event broadcaster apps that spiked and collapsed. Netflix Game Controller, the accessory app that held #1 for three mornings during the final week, is one spot from retaking it.
The AI cohort slipped one spot each as retail and utility apps rose into the vacuum, but three assistants still hold the top 10. Claude slid #7 to #8 and Gemini slid #8 to #9, both displaced by Vinted and Google climbing rather than by any AI-app weakness. The post-World-Cup chart is AI at the top, events and accessory apps in the 2-3 slots, and a reshuffled mid-chart.
ColdTrace Cracked #12. A Simulated-Phone Detective Game Climbed From #920 in 18 Days.
ColdTrace: Cold Case Mystery debuted at #12 on Apple's US free chart, a detective game by indie studio Saclic Studio where you navigate a stranger's simulated phone, reading messages, photos, notes, voicemails, and deleted files to piece together whether a death was really an accident.
The climb is the story. Per Next App Idea's rank history, ColdTrace sat at #920 on Jul 4 with 193 ratings, jumped to #68 by Jul 17 with 1.1K ratings, and landed at #12 today. That is a 908-spot climb in 18 days, accelerating hard in the last five. A v1.1.0 update ("New Case and New Design") landed in early-to-mid July and appears to be the catalyst. MWM now shows 5.1K ratings at 4.6 stars; AppstoreSpy reports 100K+ daily Android installs.
The format targets a specific audience the App Store's top 25 rarely serves: "for fans of interactive fiction, true crime podcasts, and crime documentaries." It is the same simulated-phone-investigation genre as A Normal Lost Phone and Simulacra, niche but proven to go viral when the narrative hooks. It is freemium, some cases free with a Premium in-app purchase unlocking the full experience.
Two chart-mechanics details worth noting. ColdTrace is classified as Entertainment, not Games, which is why it competes on the main free apps chart alongside ChatGPT and TikTok rather than the games chart where puzzle titles dominate. And Ember Picks lists Saclic Studio as a three-app developer whose best chart rank is #7 in Brazil, suggesting the climb is organic review velocity and word-of-mouth, not a paid user-acquisition burst, a rare indie narrative game breaking into a chart owned by shopping, AI, and social apps.
hololive Dreams Hit #4 Free Game Before It Even Launches. Tomorrow's Drop Has 1.3M Pre-Registrations.
hololive Dreams, the first official mobile game from VTuber agency hololive (Cover Corp), sat at #4 on Apple's US free-games chart today, a pre-launch position driven entirely by pre-registration velocity. The App Store listing still reads "Expected Jul 23, 2026," meaning Apple is ranking the app on pre-orders alone, a preview of the launch-day spike.
The game launches tomorrow, July 23, a global simultaneous release on iOS, Android, and Steam with cross-progression. It is a rhythm-and-RPG gacha: 150+ songs at launch, 50+ hololive talents playable, a buildable theme-park hub, and an "Original Chart" function letting players make and share their own rhythm-game levels. Developer is QualiArts, a CyberAgent subsidiary previously behind Gakuen Idolm@ster.
Streamer Magazine reports pre-registrations surpassed 1.3 million, with milestone rewards already unlocked (2,500 diamonds for 10 gacha pulls at 500K, a guaranteed 4-star ticket at 800K, three gacha tickets at 1.3M) and a "Kawaii Hairpin" cosmetic pending at 1.5M. A hololive 9th Anniversary collaboration event is planned for October, signaling long-term live-ops intent beyond launch.
The chart significance: a VTuber IP is charting above established puzzle giants. hololive Dreams at #4 pushed Magic Sort (Grand Games) down to #5, slotting in behind only Block Out (#1), Meowdoku (#2), and Smash Fest (#3). Whether it holds that floor after launch-day churn, or settles like Pokemon Champions did after its launch surge spent, is the next watch.
Two Resale-Fashion Apps in the Top 10 as Back-to-School Fills the World Cup Vacuum.
Depop climbed #5 to #4 and Vinted climbed #9 to #7, putting two resale-fashion apps in the Apple US top 10 for the second straight day. Whatnot also climbed #13 to #11, making it three marketplace apps in the top 11. The cohort is rising together as back-to-school demand, Circana's midsummer-to-Labor-Day window, fills the chart space the World Cup vacated.
The rivalry is real and structural. Depop, acquired by eBay for $1.2B in February, charges a 10% seller fee and leans on an AI listing tool (snap a photo, AI writes the description). Vinted, the Lithuanian platform with $12B in 2025 GMV, uses a buyer-pays-fee model with sellers listing free, the model that won it Germany, France, and the UK. Vinted flipped US monthly downloads ahead of Depop in April and was the most-downloaded US shopping app by late June.
The chart question: whether both hold a top-10 floor through August or revert in September when the back-to-school window closes. For now the World Cup collapse is handing them free chart real estate, and they are taking it.
Fortnite Climbs Apple's Chart While Paying Apple Roughly 0%. The External-Payment Thesis in One Number.
Fortnite climbed to #16 on Apple's US free-games chart, riding the Chapter 7 Season 3 "Hot Bat Summer" DC crossover. The v41.20 update on Jul 16 added a Batman Sprite, an Air Sprite, a Bat Cave POI, and Shiny Hours events on Jul 18, the kind of live-ops content drop that drives reinstall spikes.
The chart mechanics here are sharper than the rank suggests. Epic's own game is climbing Apple's App Store ranking while Apple and Epic fight in court over whether Apple can charge any commission on purchases routed through external links. Axis Intelligence reports Fortnite's iOS revenue was $3.9 million in its first month back on the global App Store (the May 19, 2026 return), down roughly 97% from its December 2018 mobile peak of $46 million. The gap exists because Epic processes payments through its own system outside Apple's in-app purchase, the exact mechanism the lawsuit is about. Downloads are strong: 11.5 million in the first month, peaking at 1.2 million daily installs, the highest single-day iOS figure in Fortnite's history. The demand is real. The revenue that Apple captures from it is near zero.
That is the external-payment thesis playing out in numbers, on Apple's own chart, while the ruling that would let Apple charge a commission on exactly these transactions sits undelivered.

- Short-drama deflation. StoryReel slid #10 to #15 and VibeShort slid #19 to #24 as the AI-comic-drama cohort settles lower. DramaWave fell out of the top 25. The clone wave (StoryReel and VibeShort share near-identical codebases per the Paper) is diluting the category as the initial ad-spend surge fades.
- Games chart holds. Block Out (Grand Games) held #1 free game for a second day over Meowdoku #2 and Smash Fest #3. The paid-UA engine ($300K/day, 1,000+ creatives) is sustaining the lead over Meowdoku's organic-velocity model. hololive Dreams at #4 pushed Magic Sort to #5.
- Apple/Epic, still waiting. No ruling from Judge Gonzalez Rogers on Apple's stay motion. Briefing completed Jul 14; the last filing was the Coral Springs stay submission on Jul 18. Status quo: 0% external-link commission, Apple forgoing 27%. If denied, Apple files a commission proposal within 24 hours. If granted, the case is on ice through SCOTUS (arguments Oct-Dec 2026, ruling ~Jun 2027).
- Retail and utility filled the vacuum. Sam's Club (#21) and Walmart (#23) entered the top 25, DoorDash climbed #24 to #19, Shop climbed #21 to #17, and Microsoft Authenticator returned at #25. These are perennial apps rising into the four slots the World Cup cohort and X vacated, not demand surges.
